How to find inspiration? Where to find inspiration? Where to get ideas?
Inspiration – the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative. Ideas are everywhere around us.
“If we look at the world with a love of life, the world will reveal its beauty to us.” ~Daisaku Iked
Below I want to give a few tips that help myself to find inspiration and ideas.
Tip 1: Follow artists to get ideas of your own
When you are looking at artworks you really like – it’s like you’re eating healthy food. It is your food. And as no one can stay without food really long, you need to eat! Follow your favorite artists, go to museums and galleries. Go to libraries and bookstores and browse the books that rivet your gaze.
Tip 2: Absorb the surroundings
Maybe your son’s socks are so funny, that you can make a great pattern from them. Maybe you have a collection of cactuses on your kitchen shelf – go ahead and use it! Maybe your neighbor is a crazy cat lover – you know what to do =) No no! Don’t kill these cute little buddies – draw them! Paint them!
Tip 3: Free your head
I really can’t create anything, when my head is overwhelmed with different tasks and problems. You need to find a way to clean your head. Go for a walk, get rid of your problems, do your necessary tasks first, have a coffee and then go back to your art world. It will get much easier to bring new ideas with a clean and noise free mind. Don’t force the ideas to come, they will come after you let yourself switch to something else or sometimes even do nothing!
Tip 4: Inspiration wall
If you like something – save it and go through it from time to time! Designspiration or Pinterest is very helpful in this case. You can create boards and pin pictures you like. Fill your boards with everything that strikes you. You can make different boards, with different themes. I find it very helpful.
Tip 5: Read books
Books are great! When you read, you fill your brain with a lot of different information that can help you find ideas and let those ideas get to your creative brain cells.
Tip 6: Doodle
If you can’t think of what to draw, just put your pencil to paper and make it move. Do scribbles, draw lines, simple shapes, or anything else that comes out. Doodling allows you to think and create in a subconscious way. Try it!
Tip 7: Don’t be afraid of failure
Don’t be afraid to tear all your hard work and do it differently. It’s much easier to hold on to your old idea because you are afraid to admit that you were wrong – just let it go!
